A long weekend on the eastern seaboard. -
Pondicherry and Mahabalipuram-25th-28th jan 18 4 Days / 3 Nights

Pondicherry and Mahabalipuram. 4 days and 3 nights

How many places in India will you get a chance to paddle out on a surf board and yell “Surfs Up”, with abandon? Not too many, we assure you!! But, Wonderful World offers you a weekend break with the opportunity to do just that.
Pondicherry promises the best surf that India has to offer and we have tied up with Kallialay Surf School to bring you an introductory session with instructors that are the surf pioneers in India. It truly promises to be an exhilarating experience and our surf instructors make surfing look like the most effortless exercise on earth. It’s something you have to try out!

Our itinerary promises to be a fun, relaxed one where you chill out and stay with the surf or move at a slightly more frenetic pace and “do Pondicherry”.
The choice is yours.

We have picked the perfect time of the year for you to be in Pondi, as the locals affectionately call it. We are staying at a very charming 19th century Colonial Heritage Guest House located in the French Quarter.

Pondicherry is a city of contradictions. From the firmly traditional saris and dhotis of the Aayyas (grandmas) and the Thatha’s (grandpas), to the wildly modern café culture of the French, to the bohemian, laidback approach of the folks at Auroville….there is something for everyone. Everyone has a place, everyone fits in, and somehow there is calm amidst the chaos.
We end the trip with a visit to Mahabalipuram to see the ancient shore temple, the panch rathas and other rock carvings. If you have any space in your luggage maybe you could indulge in a little shopping at the local leather stores before heading back to Chennai.

Come with us for an unforgettable holiday to this unforgettable destination.

Day 1:  Thursday 25th Jan (Only Tiffin Included)

  • – Pick up from Chennai airport at 11 am. Lunch enroute. Check in to the hotel by 2:30 pm and relax.
  • – 4 PM Pondi tiffin (snacks and filter coffee)
  • – 6 PM walk along the Promenade
  • – Dinner at a French cafe. (at own cost)

Overnight at Gratitude Pondicherry

The devil is in the details: Your initiation to Pondi will involve sampling some South Indian “tiffin” as soon as you are driven into this quaint little town. After a couple of Idli-vadas and maybe a navratan dosa (or three), we will take a stroll on one of India’s very few, pedestrian-only promenades, at twilight. It’s a fun place to relax and sit on the rocks. Take a few moments to let your system adjust to a slightly more laid-back pace of life while watching the local inhabitants get to their 10000 steps in the fresh sea air.
Once the stars come out, we will stroll down to have dinner at a little French café before heading back to our heritage hotel, which was built in the 19th century and has oodles of character.

Day 2:  Friday 26th Jan (Breakfast included)

  • – 6 AM Watch the sunrise over the water on the Promenade.
  • – 9 AM Visit to Auroville
  • – 4 PM Pondi heritage walk

The devil is in the details: Day two could include an early start for those who want to capture the essence of Pondicherry with sunrise over the water. For those who prefer the luxury of sleeping in, you can do just that.
After a leisurely breakfast, we will drive to Auroville, where we will get the chance to see the visitors centre, and the gardens at the Matrimandir. For the uninitiated, Auroville is a universal town where people of all countries are able to live in peace and progressive harmony. The concept itself boggles the mind, when our world is so fragmented. But, the residents of Auroville make it work and it’s amazing to experience their world.
In the evening, we will cross “Le Petit Canel”, (Yes, Pondi still has a lot of street names in French, which I found adorable), and take a walk through the historical French Quarter.

Overnight at Gratitude Pondicherry

Day 3:  Saturday 27th January (Breakfast included)

  • – Leisurely breakfast
  • – Visit to Pondi bazaar, and a handmade paper factory
  • – Lunch at Baker Street (at own cost)
  • – In the afternoon try your hand at Surf School (time is subject to change depending on the tides)
  • – Evening at leisure

The devil is in the details:
Day three will begin pretty much the same way as day two. After breakfast, we will head to the Pondi bazaar streets, which is the main shopping area. We can do a little browsing, maybe bargain for some luridly coloured cottons or treat ourselves to the finest leather purses that India has to offer at the flagship Hidesign store. We will also visit a handmade paper factory and outlet store. After a brief stop at the famous “Bakers street” café for a light lunch (own cost), we will head over to the surf school, for an introductory surfing lesson. The thrill of being able to catch a wave and finally stand upright on a surf board is truly magical. The only prerequisite for this activity is that you know how to swim. If you choose not to surf, you can hang out on the beach, spend more time shopping or even get driven back to the hotel for a siesta.

Overnight at Gratiture Pondicherru

Day 4:  Sunday 28th January (Breakfast included)

  • – Early breakfast
  • – We will leave Pondicherry by 9am
  • – Enroute we will stop at Mahabalipuram

The devil is in the details: we will say goodbye to the quirky little town of Pondi and head up the famous East Coast Road to Chennai. Enroute, we would like to give you the opportunity to stop at Mahabalipuram to view the famous ruins of the Pallava era (3th to 9th Century). We will stop at the Shore Temple that guided sailors into safe harbour from the times of Marco Polo. You can also take the opportunity to visit the Five stone chariots (named after the 5 Pandavas) and view the granite lion and elephant relief that was revealed only in 2004, after the Tsunami washed away tons of coastal sand.
We will have lunch enroute and reach Chennai airport by 5 pm. Please book flights departing after 6 pm.
