Norway - Bucket List series Norway-Hunting the Northern Lights-20-29th-jan 10 Days / 9 Nights

Norway – Bucket List series 1 – (Hunting the Northern Lights)

Would you like to be one of the few women that get to visit Norway?

Yes, we know that it may be one of the most expensive countries in the world to visit – but it also has some of the highest Aurora Borealis activity in the world – Tromsø is located in the middle of the Northern Lights Oval, which means you have greatest chance of seeing the lights, regardless of the sun’s cycles.

Come with us, this winter, to hunt the Northern Lights – Norway. We were there in 2017 and it was an experience of a lifetime. So, come with us on a voyage of discovery, to look up at the starry arctic sky, north of the Arctic Circle, where the northern lights are visible 252 nights a year.

Experience that stunning arctic blue light, which one can enjoy only in winter.

We have added on some land experiences to our holiday so that all essential Norwegian experiences can be enjoyed on a single trip. Spend 10 days and 9 nights in one of the world’s most beautiful countries.

We land in Oslo and spend a day in this modern Scandinavian city – Norway. Then take one of the most scenic rail journeys from Oslo to Flam. If you had the chance to only do one train ride in your lifetime, this would be it. The landscape is stunning, its versatile and simply out of the world.

Then transfer to Bergen and take in the architecture of this old city, with some buildings dating back 900 years. Walking around Bergen is one of our favourite parts of this holiday and a wonderful way to see this charming city.

And the next part of the journey is super-exciting as we spend 5 nights chasing the lights. We spend three nights on land – chasing the lights and then two nights on a winter expedition cruise.

The time of the year is great, chances to see the lights are very high and we have combined land and boat tours this time to try and ensure the same!

  1. Stay in comfortable 3 / 4 star hotels centrally located
  2. Take the scenic ride from Oslo to Flam
  3. Walk around the UNESCO heritage site – Bergen
  4. Have the best shot at spotting the Northern Lights – with two nights out at Sea and three night on land
  5. Visit the Snowhotel

Good to know, before you go:

  1. Outside temperatures range between + 5 C to -10 C. but the hotels / ships are warm and cosy. We will give you a packing list to help you stay warm.
  2. The expedition ship is not your average large cruise ship with karaoke bars and casinos. It is a smaller, cosier expedition ship with all the comforts of home, a heated outdoor jacuzzi, bars, a library, gym and they serve up the most delicious food.
  3. As you probably realize, we don’t have a hotline to the Gods. So, while we have picked the best time of the year for you to see the northern lights. Remember you will have a window of opportunity that lasts 5 nights (which is more than most people ever have on land tours), please also remember that the Northern Lights is natural phenomenon. We cannot guarantee its appearance. However, we do guarantee that we will channel every positive thought in our heads towards hoping the lights put in a few grand appearances for you.

Take the world’s most scenic train ride from Oslo to Flam. This is an incredible journey via mountains and fjords. Because of its steep gradient and picturesque nature, the Flam Railway has become one of the most visited tourist attractions in Norway. It is the steepest railway in Europe and you get to go through almost 20 tunnels on this bucket-list train journey.

(We have employed a porter service that will take your bags direct from Oslo to Bergen so we don’t have to lug bus bags around) . So you will just need to carry an overnight bag with you and can enjoy the journey unencumbered.

Jan 23rd : Flam to Bergen (Includes breakfast)

Flam to Gudvangen by boat – Classic Vehicle)
Transfer by Coach to Voss
And then Voss to Bergen by train

Trivia: The Bryggen district in Bergen consists of the old wharf and its surrounding commercial buildings (a former center of the league of Hanseatic merchants), and features vibrantly colored wooden houses

Overnight at Comfort Hotel

Jan 24th: Bergen – Tromso (includes Breakfast and a light evening buffet meal at the hotel)

We start our day with a two hour walking tour of Bergen.

Then head to the airport for our flight to Tromso. You will be north of the Arctic circle now….very, very few tourists get to go this far north, so count yourself among the lucky few.

Once we check into the hotel and start the first chase for Ms. Aurora at around 7:30 pm. We go in a group by bus and to find a clear sky, the guide will drive us to Inner Troms if need be and will provide us with information about the Northern Lights.

We chase the lights for about 5-6 hours.

Overnight at Clarion Collection Hotel

Jan 25th : Free day in Tromso (breakfast included)

This is a free day. Tromso doesn’t have too many sights – but there are few things to do and we can use local transport and get to them.

Tromso is a vibrant city, way north of any place you might have ever been and the atmosphere is eclectic. They have long winter days and months and do their best to make it fun!

In the evening we have not planned any excursions, so you can choose what you would like to do. Maybe either a Snowmobile ride to watch the northern lights. Or you could chose to watch the lights on a husky tour. We can discuss options while booking.

Trivia: the city has heated sidewalks along the main street and heated outdoor benches to encourage shopping and hanging out, no matter how cold it is.

Jan 26th: Tromso – Hurtigruten – inside cabin (includes breakfast and dinner)

Just post lunch we board our ship and check in. This part of the journey will be really exciting as there is a really high possibility of seeing the northern lights. Also, light pollution is almost non-existent while on the water, away from the city lights, so watching the lights from the deck of the ship is nothing short of brilliant.

Jan 27th : Honningsvåg and the North Cape: Thursday 16th Feb (includes breakfast and dinner)

Our ship docks at – Honningsvåg, the nearest port to the North Cape.

An optional excursion to this breathtaking site puts you at 71° 10’ 21” N, only 1,243 miles from the Geographic North Pole. This is the northern most point of our journey and pretty much puts you at the northern most tip of the European continent.

Trivia: Honningsvag is home to indigenous Sami people who still herd reindeer for a living.

At night – we have a high possibiliy of viewing the lights again!

Jan 28th :Kirkenes (includes breakfast)

We disembark at Kirkenes. This is really close to the Russian border.

After we transfer to the hotel and check in, we will make a visit to the Snowhotel. The snowhotel is rebuilt every winter once it is cold enough and there is enough snow on the ground. It’s an incredible experience to see it and maybe grab a drink at Norway’s largest ice-bar.

There are also a few winter activities that you could opt for here, we can discuss this during the booking process.

Northern Lights by Kirkenes Aurora Bus

Already when the evening dusk starts in august, the magic green light starts to appear.
A knowledgeable guide will check the latest magnetic forecast and decide whether to take you by minibus towards the Russian border or in the opposite direction toward the Finnish border.

We chase the lights for about 2-3 hours and the excursion includes a snack and some toddy

Overnight at Thon Kirkenes

Trivia: Kirkenes is home to the fantastic Snowhotel and the base for several exciting excursions, including dog sledding and king crab fishing.

Jan 29th : Kirkenes – Oslo – back home (breakfast included)

Today we fly from Kirkenes to Oslo and fly back home

Please discuss flight options for flying back home with us before you book

You will need to book an evening flight out.

Just in case the flight timings do not work – then we can book you into a hotel close to the airport and you can fly back home on the 30th – (at an additional cost)
